Jesus Christ Is Enough // Consider Jesus (Heb. 3:1-6)

Introduction

Christianity has a long history of being misunderstood, even by Christians! It's all too easy to make it about Jesus PLUS something (good works, moral living, religious activities, emotional experience…). But the book of Hebrews claims that when we add anything to Jesus, we're actually subtracting. It holds up Jesus Christ – fully God, fully human – as the promised Deliverer. The One who alone saves us from our sinfulness and restores our relationships with God, others, and creation. Its message, the message of Christianity, is really quite simple: Jesus Christ is enough!

Ice Breaker Questions

Here are some possible ways to get a conversation started:

  1. If someone was visiting NP for the day, what would you have them do? Eat?

  2. What is your most used app (exclude phone, email, and text messaging)?

Getting Started

1. Open up with some prayer – some possible prayer topics:

  • God would lead your time of discussion.

  • That this study would help our understanding of who God is and who we are in light of that.

  • Pray for your GG, that God would bring unity and community in your group.

  • We would see Jesus as the author of Hebrews describes Him.

2. Read Hebrews 3:1-6

Discussion Questions

  1. In verse 1 we see that Jesus is our apostle “sent one” and high priest of our confession. How do you feel about bringing your brokenness/sin to Jesus? Is there anything in your life you are withholding from Him? Why?

  2. Both Moses and Jesus understood and carried out what God had called them to do, even leading to Jesus dying on the cross. What is Jesus calling you to do in this season? Is there something you are scared Jesus is or will call you to? Read Matt. 26:39-44. What about Jesus wrestling with His calling is encouraging to us?

  3. Moses was one of, if not the, greatest person the Jewish person could think of. He was who they looked to for guidance, advice, leadership, example, etc. Who is the greatest person you can think of? What attributes do you most admire about them? How specifically is Jesus even better than that person?

  4. If verse 3 says that Jesus is the builder and verse four tells us the builder of all things is God, what correlation is it making between Jesus and God? How is it encouraging that Jesus is building/developing you even in this moment? What is an area of your life that you still need Christ to build you up in?

  5. There are many people in the world that struggle with loneliness and a sense of abandonment. How does the truth of us as believers all being a part of this spiritual house intersect with that loneliness? How do we meet discouraged believers with the truths about the good builder and the house?

Closing Prayer

Prayer can often be somewhat of a weird time, and we understand it can be awkward to pray out loud, but as your group grows in comfortability ask people to pray out loud. Prayer is a very effective tool the Holy Spirit uses to draw our hearts closer to God. It is also a time you as a group can come together and come before the throne of God and make requests and just experience Him.

Some suggestions:

  • Ask if there are any prayer requests.

  • Pray that Jesus would use the week to reaffirm the truths discussed here.

  • Pray for a new/renewed understanding of who Jesus is.

Personal Spiritual Practice

This section is for anyone that wants some practical steps to try throughout their week. They are not required, but maybe a great way to reinforce what has been discussed during group. Maybe this could even be a way to check in either during the week or the next time you meet as a group.

  1. Sitting with God: Imagine having a cup of coffee with Jesus. Review the people, events and happenings of the last few days. Ask Jesus to speak to you about your life. What things does Jesus seem to be pointing out to you?

  2. Soaking in the Word: For most of us, learning is the goal when we read scripture, but in this context we simply want to hear what God is saying; to listen, feel and experience the Words of Christ washing over you.

  3. Read Hebrews 3:7-19 (or listen on a Bible app if you have one) for 5 days in a row, perhaps from different versions. What words or phrases seem to be emphasized? Ask Jesus, “What do I need to know today about my life with you?

Jesus Christ Is Enough // The Perfections of Jesus (Heb. 2:10-18)

  1. If you had to pick a karaoke song right now, what would you pick?

  2. If you could try any food, what would you try?

Getting Started

1. Open up with some prayer – some possible prayer topics:

  • God would lead your time of discussion.

  • That this study would help our understanding of who God is and who we are in light of that.

  • Pray for your GG, that God would bring unity and community in your group.

  • We would see Jesus as the author of Hebrews describes Him.

2. Read Hebrews 2:10-18

Discussion Questions

  1. One of the hardest concepts for us to wrap our head around when it comes to Jesus is that He is fully man and fully God. When you think of Jesus do you naturally focus on Him being God or Him being human? What is the harm in forgetting that He is God? What is the harm in forgetting His humanity?

  2. How do you view your relationship with Jesus? How does it make you feel when Jesus is referred to being our sibling? Is it easy or hard for you to view Jesus as family? Why is that?

  3. When verse 15 talks about saving us from slavery, what do you think the author is talking about? What does being enslaved to sin look like? Are there sins that are still enslaving you today? What hope do verses 14 & 16 give us about our sin?

  4. It is so easy for us to have a small view of our sin. What does Romans 6:23 teach us about the consequences of our sin? When we sin, who do we sin against? Who, then, is payment for our sins owed to? What happens if Christ does not pay the penalty for us? How does your heart respond to the reality for what Christ has done? How does that reality motivate you for others who have not accepted the truth of what Christ has done?

  5. What does it mean when it says that Jesus is a merciful and faithful high priest? (If you need more info on Jesus as our High Priest you can read this article or watch this video.) What does this truth mean to us today? How do we take this truth into our daily lives and battles against our sin?

  6. Jesus lived a fully human life, that means he experienced everything we experience as humans. (Good days, bad days, grief, victory, trials, temptations, etc.) If Jesus knows what it is like to be tempted, how does that impact His feelings toward us in our temptation? What, if any, encouragement does that give us with our sin?

Testimony: Take time and write out the story of how God has worked in your life. Look to take your story and highlight it to a 15-minute time length.

• Before:

  • How did you pursue happiness?

  • Where was God pursuing you before you pursued Him back?

  • What were you lacking before Christ?

• How:

  • How did God finally grab ahold of your life?

  • What were the circumstances that led to that decision?

  • Was anyone else involved?

  • What made you desire that change?

• After:

  • How has your life looked different since?

  • How has God met those original needs?

  • What is God doing in your life now?

Jesus Christ Is Enough // Rightful Ruler (Heb. 2:5-9)

  1. Do you prefer it to be super cold or super hot?

  2. Have you ever been overseas? Where?

Getting Started

1. Open up with some prayer – some possible prayer topics:

  • God would lead your time of discussion.

  • That this study would help our understanding of who God is and who we are in light of that.

  • Pray for your GG, that God would bring unity and community in your group.

  • We would enjoy who Christ is and see both His power and Lordship over our lives.

2. Read Hebrews 2:5-9

Discussion Questions

  1. Scripture calls us co-rulers with Christ. How are we doing with that? Do we value what He values? How do we move toward aligning our values with His?

    2. In today’s world it can often be about how much power someone can get and how someone can use that power for their own benefit. How does Jesus’ life fight against that notion? How can we practically follow in that example of submission?

    3. When God created man, He created them to rule over the world, how would describe how that is going? Is this world working well or does it seem like chaos? What does that say about our, as humans, ability to rule?

    4. Jesus practiced the ultimate self-denial in that He took on humanity and did not grasp at the power that was rightly His. (Phil. 2) What do you see yourself grasping at? (i.e., wealth, power, recognition, comfortability, pleasure, etc.) Where is God calling you to deny yourself?

    5. Scripture never shies away from the topic of suffering and verse 9 talks about Christ suffering for us. What do you think it means when we are called to suffer like Christ? What does suffering look like in our life? How does that make you feel?

Closing Prayer

Prayer can often be somewhat of a weird time, and we understand it can be awkward to pray out loud, but as your group grows in comfortability ask people to pray out loud. Prayer is a very effective tool the Holy Spirit uses to draw our hearts closer to God. It is also a time you as a group can come together and come before the throne of God and make requests and just experience Him.

Some suggestions:

  • Ask if there are any prayer requests.

  • Pray that Jesus would use the week to reaffirm the truths discussed here.

  • Pray that God would put a burden on each person for Berean.

  • Pray for a new understanding of who Jesus is.

Personal Spiritual Practice

This section is for anyone that wants some practical steps to try throughout their week. they are not required, but maybe a great way to reinforce what has been discussed during group. Maybe this could even be a way to check in either during the week or the next time you meet as a group.

Heart Check: For this week, every day sit down and write down all the sins you have committed each day. If you are not sure, ask the Lord to help you see where you have failed. Take notice the areas where you heart tends to drift to and try and ask yourself why or what leads your heart there. Seek repentance from the Lord and ask Him how you should proceed forward in fighting those sin tendencies.

Ask Others: We are often so blind to our own sin tendencies – that is why they are called “blind spots”. Ask those around you (spouse, children, friends, mentors, etc.) what your blind spots are. What are the things in your life you are not even aware you are doing and how can you take a step in recognizing and moving away from them?
