Jesus Christ Is Enough // The Perfections of Jesus (Heb. 2:10-18)

Introduction

Christianity has a long history of being misunderstood, even by Christians! It's all too easy to make it about Jesus PLUS something (good works, moral living, religious activities, emotional experience…). But the book of Hebrews claims that when we add anything to Jesus, we're actually subtracting. It holds up Jesus Christ – fully God, fully human – as the promised Deliverer. The One who alone saves us from our sinfulness and restores our relationships with God, others, and creation. Its message, the message of Christianity, is really quite simple: Jesus Christ is enough!

Ice Breaker Questions

Here are some possible ways to get a conversation started:

  1. If you had to pick a karaoke song right now, what would you pick?

  2. If you could try any food, what would you try?

Getting Started

1. Open up with some prayer – some possible prayer topics:

  • God would lead your time of discussion.

  • That this study would help our understanding of who God is and who we are in light of that.

  • Pray for your GG, that God would bring unity and community in your group.

  • We would see Jesus as the author of Hebrews describes Him.

2. Read Hebrews 2:10-18

Discussion Questions

  1. One of the hardest concepts for us to wrap our head around when it comes to Jesus is that He is fully man and fully God. When you think of Jesus do you naturally focus on Him being God or Him being human? What is the harm in forgetting that He is God? What is the harm in forgetting His humanity?

  2. How do you view your relationship with Jesus? How does it make you feel when Jesus is referred to being our sibling? Is it easy or hard for you to view Jesus as family? Why is that?

  3. When verse 15 talks about saving us from slavery, what do you think the author is talking about? What does being enslaved to sin look like? Are there sins that are still enslaving you today? What hope do verses 14 & 16 give us about our sin?

  4. It is so easy for us to have a small view of our sin. What does Romans 6:23 teach us about the consequences of our sin? When we sin, who do we sin against? Who, then, is payment for our sins owed to? What happens if Christ does not pay the penalty for us? How does your heart respond to the reality for what Christ has done? How does that reality motivate you for others who have not accepted the truth of what Christ has done?

  5. What does it mean when it says that Jesus is a merciful and faithful high priest? (If you need more info on Jesus as our High Priest you can read this article or watch this video.) What does this truth mean to us today? How do we take this truth into our daily lives and battles against our sin?

  6. Jesus lived a fully human life, that means he experienced everything we experience as humans. (Good days, bad days, grief, victory, trials, temptations, etc.) If Jesus knows what it is like to be tempted, how does that impact His feelings toward us in our temptation? What, if any, encouragement does that give us with our sin?

Closing Prayer

Prayer can often be somewhat of a weird time, and we understand it can be awkward to pray out loud, but as your group grows in comfortability ask people to pray out loud. Prayer is a very effective tool the Holy Spirit uses to draw our hearts closer to God. It is also a time you as a group can come together and come before the throne of God and make requests and just experience Him.

Some suggestions:

  • Ask if there are any prayer requests.

  • Pray that Jesus would use the week to reaffirm the truths discussed here.

  • Pray for a new/renewed understanding of who Jesus is.

Personal Spiritual Practice

This section is for anyone that wants some practical steps to try throughout their week. they are not required, but maybe a great way to reinforce what has been discussed during group. Maybe this could even be a way to check in either during the week or the next time you meet as a group.

Testimony: Take time and write out the story of how God has worked in your life. Look to take your story and highlight it to a 15-minute time length.

• Before:

  • How did you pursue happiness?

  • Where was God pursuing you before you pursued Him back?

  • What were you lacking before Christ?

• How:

  • How did God finally grab ahold of your life?

  • What were the circumstances that led to that decision?

  • Was anyone else involved?

  • What made you desire that change?

• After:

  • How has your life looked different since?

  • How has God met those original needs?

  • What is God doing in your life now?
