Feb. 12 - Overcoming Opposition (Neh. 4)

First listen to the sermon (posts Sun. afternoon). Then use the ideas below to help you and your group apply what the Lord is teaching you. Icebreaker idea: What's one way you've seen God provide for you sometime in the past year? (Can be something big, small, or anywhere in between.)

A way to pray: Based on the first two discussion questions below, pray for each other to overcome (in the right way!) the opposition we're facing. Also, continue praying for our initiative to see 2000 people baptized and connected to Jesus through the Word, prayer, and community by 2022.

For discussion:

  • What opposition did the Jews face in Nehemiah 4? What opposition am I facing (or have I faced) in my life?
  • What is the right way for God's people to deal with opposition?
  • What does it cost me to forgive someone? What are the steps I have to go through, and what role does Jesus' forgiveness play in this process?
  • What excites me about the future God has promised his children? How does that affect my response when I encounter opposition?

Feb. 5 - All Hands on Deck (Neh. 3)

First listen to the sermon (posts Sun. afternoon). Then use the ideas below to help you and your group apply what the Lord is teaching you. Icebreaker idea: What's your favorite team sport? What position on the team would you most enjoy playing, and why?

A way to pray: Pray for every part here at Berean to know and play our parts well as we seek to see 2000 people baptized and connected to Jesus through the Word, prayer, and community by 2022.

For discussion:

  • What part(s) has God had me play in His body in the past?
  • What are some of the ways God wants to use me right now in the church body here at Berean? (It might be helpful to consider your interests, the opportunities available, and what others see in you.)
  • What are some of the common excuses we might use to avoid playing our part?
  • What excites me about what God is doing in and through NPBC right now, including both my Grow Group and the church as a whole?

Jan. 29 - Risky Readiness (Neh. 2)

First listen to the sermon (posts Sun. afternoon). Then use the ideas below to help you and your group apply what the Lord is teaching you. Icebreaker idea: What's one of the biggest human-made structures/creations you've seen in person? What are 3 things you remember about it?

A way to pray: Pray for the big requests / steps of faith identified through the group discussion (below).

For discussion:

  • What are some of the risks we face as Christ's followers today?
  • Where is God calling me to rise up and/or risk for him right now?
  • How do we prepare to take these kinds of faith steps? How do the Word, prayer, and Christian community help as we prepare and as we step out?
  • What are some of the big requests we're making of the Lord right now, that would significantly change our church, our community, and us as individuals?

Jan. 22 - Embracing Heartbreak (Neh. 1)

First listen to the sermon (posts Sun. afternoon). Then use the ideas below to help you and your group apply what the Lord is teaching you. Icebreaker idea: What's one job you've never had but think you would really enjoy?

A way to pray: Based on the final discussion question below, take time as a group to praise God, confess sin, and bring your requests before Him. (It may be beneficial to split into smaller groups or single-gender groups for this.)

For discussion:

  • Why is it often easier for us to overlook others' pain rather than engaging?
  • How does Treasuring God help us see and respond to the heartbreak of others? (And what, specifically, do I treasure about Him that helps me do this)?
  • When have I experienced someone really entering into my struggles and caring for me? What are some practical examples of how we can do this for others?
  • What are the key components of Nehemiah's prayer in chapter 1? What situations and people am I praying for right now?
