Apr. 16 - He Is Risen! (Lk. 24:13-35)

First listen to the sermon (posts Sun. afternoon). Then use the ideas below to help you and your group apply what the Lord is teaching you. Icebreaker idea: What is one part of your Easter celebration that really helps you focus on and enjoy Jesus?

A way to pray: Pray for boldness for one another to make life changes and share the Easter story as discussed in this week's final two discussion questions. Continue praying for the 2000 people we're seeking to see baptized and connected to Jesus through the Word, prayer, and community by 2022.

For discussion:

  • What parts of Jesus' story throughout the Scriptures touch my heart the most?
  • Why did the Messiah have to suffer and die? Why was it so hard for Jesus' first followers to accept this?
  • Why is it still hard to accept that Jesus had to die for us? Why can it be hard to accept that he was glad to die for us (see Hebrews 12:2, Isaiah 53:11)?
  • Why is Jesus' resurrection from the dead such a big deal for Christians? What evidence do we have that it really happened?
  • What would have to change about our lives if all this is really true? What needs to change in my own life?
  • Who in my life needs to hear or be reminded of the Easter story? How will I share it with them?

Apr. 9 - Demand or Plea? (Lk. 23:32-43)

First listen to the sermon (posts Sun. afternoon). Then use the ideas below to help you and your group apply what the Lord is teaching you. Icebreaker idea: Do you prefer to plan things out or to take life as it comes? What do you do when you're put in a situation where you have to do the opposite of the one you prefer?

A way to pray: See this week's final discussion question.

For discussion:

  • What are some things people commonly demand from God? What do I tend to demand?
  • How can we grow in preferring God's will to our own, rather than simply demanding our own way?
  • When is a time that I didn't get my way and later was glad I didn't?
  • What's something I'm asking God for right now? (Pray these things for each other in the group.)

Apr. 2 - Creating Spaces (Heb. 11:1-7)

First listen to the sermon (posts Sun. afternoon). Then use the ideas below to help you and your group apply what the Lord is teaching you. Icebreaker idea: What's one group activity or event you enjoyed as a child? What made it special?

A way to pray: Spend time praying for each other, for those in our lives who don't yet know Jesus, and for the Lord's guidance as we seek to create spaces to reach more faces.

For discussion:

  • What is faith? What is the connection between our faith and our actions?
  • What do we believe about God that is leading us as a church to create spaces to reach more faces?
  • Why can it be hard to believe that, by 2022, we will see 2000 people baptized and growing in relationship with Jesus through Word, prayer, and community?
  • How do I decide what makes my giving "sacrificial" in the areas of time, talents, and treasure?
  • What role does prayer play as we seek to create spaces to reach more faces? What does that look like for me practically?

Mar. 26 - Moment of Truth (Mt. 27:2,11-26; Jn. 19:38-42)

First listen to the sermon (posts Sun. afternoon). Then use the ideas below to help you and your group apply what the Lord is teaching you. Icebreaker idea: What is one of your favorite things about Easter and why?

A way to pray: Pray for courage to identify with Jesus in our day-to-day lives as we seek to see 2000 people baptized and connected to Jesus through the Word, prayer, and community by 2022. Pray specifically, by name, for those in our lives who aren't connected to Him.

For discussion:

  • How are Pilate and Joseph alike? different?
  • When have I had a "moment of truth" where I had to decide what I believe about Jesus?
  • What are some of the things that might make us reluctant to identify with Jesus in our community and in our culture today?
  • Why are the historical eyewitness accounts of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection so important for Christians?
  • What do we mean when we say we can encounter Jesus today through the Word, prayer, and community? How have I seen this happen in my own life?
