Jesus Christ Is Enough // First Warning (Heb. 2:1-4)

Introduction

Christianity has a long history of being misunderstood, even by Christians! It's all too easy to make it about Jesus PLUS something (good works, moral living, religious activities, emotional experience…). But the book of Hebrews claims that when we add anything to Jesus, we're actually subtracting. It holds up Jesus Christ – fully God, fully human – as the promised Deliverer. The One who alone saves us from our sinfulness and restores our relationships with God, others, and creation. Its message, the message of Christianity, is really quite simple: Jesus Christ is enough!

Ice Breaker Questions

Here are some possible ways to get a conversation started:

  1. Who did you root for in the Super Bowl this weekend?

  2. What is your favorite ethnicity of food?

Getting Started

1. Open up with some prayer – some possible prayer topics:

  • God would lead your time of discussion.

  • That this study would help our understanding of who God is and who we are in light of that.

  • Pray for your GG, that God would bring unity and community in your group.

  • We would enjoy who Christ is and see both His power and Lordship over our lives.

2. Read Hebrews 2:1-4

Discussion Questions

  1. Read Heb 2:2 & Acts 7:53. What message is the author referring to when they say, “the message declared by angels?” What is the message of Jesus?

  2. What are the things you find yourself thinking about or focusing on throughout your day? What do you do when that thing you are focusing on is threatened? (For example, if its finances, what happens when you have an unexpected cost come up?)

  3. Hebrews 2:1-4 gives us a warning that if we do not pay close attention to the message we will “drift” away from it. What does drifting look like in your life? Why is it important that we stayed tethered to this message?

  4. Our faith is never static, we are either drifting toward God or away from Him. What are the things that help focus your mind on Christ? What is one practical step you could take to keep your mind focused on Christ each day? What role could this community take in helping each person keep from drifting from God?

  5. How do you view the Bible? Is it just some stories with some lessons to learn or do you see it as true history? How do we know it is true history? (Heb. 2:4)

  6. Does it make any difference if the message of Jesus is verified truth? What does it change? What would a life look like if it displayed the truths of Jesus Christ?  Does your life reflect a belief that the message of Jesus is true? If not, why not?

Closing Prayer

Prayer can often be somewhat of a weird time, and we understand it can be awkward to pray out loud, but as your group grows in comfortability ask people to pray out loud. Prayer is a very effective tool the Holy Spirit uses to draw our hearts closer to God. It is also a time you as a group can come together and come before the throne of God and make requests and just experience Him.

Some suggestions:

  • Ask if there are any prayer requests.

  • Pray that Jesus would use the week to reaffirm the truths discussed here.

  • Pray that God would put a burden on each person for Berean.

  • Pray for a new understanding of who Jesus is.

Personal Spiritual Practice

This section is for anyone that wants some practical steps to try throughout their week. they are not required, but maybe a great way to reinforce what has been discussed during group. Maybe this could even be a way to check in either during the week or the next time you meet as a group.

Heart Check: For this week, every day sit down and write down all the sins you have committed each day. If you are not sure, ask the Lord to help you see where you have failed. Take notice the areas where you heart tends to drift to and try and ask yourself why or what leads your heart there. Seek repentance from the Lord and ask Him how you should proceed forward in fighting those sin tendencies.

Ask Others: We are often so blind to our own sin tendencies – that is why they are called “blind spots”. Ask those around you (spouse, children, friends, mentors, etc.) what your blind spots are. What are the things in your life you are not even aware you are doing and how can you take a step in recognizing and moving away from them?

Jesus Christ Is Enough // Jesus > Angels (Heb. 1:5-14)

  1. What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

  2. What is your “party trick?”

2. Read Hebrews 1:5-14

Discussion Questions

  1. Hebrews 1:5-14 is mainly talking about how Jesus compares to angels and how He is superior to them in different ways. Why do you think the author of Hebrews is even talking through this? Does this conversation matter today? Why or why not?

  2. It has become very popular in culture to talk about the spiritual world and specifically about demons. What truth is presented here can comfort us when it comes to our struggle with demonic forces? Where does this specific passage fir into the series of “Jesus Christ Is Enough?”

  3. As we have a conversation about Jesus being superior to even the angels, what is something you struggle to see Jesus as superior to? (Maybe it is a specific sin in your life, hard circumstances, the future, etc.) What is your reaction when you encounter those situations?

  4. Hebrews 1:5-14 takes the time to point out how truly amazing Jesus is and how superior He is in His position, nature, role, and destiny. How does this impact our understanding of the greatness of the Gospel? How does understanding this truth change how we may live our lives?

  5. Read Heb. 1:10-14. What does the text say regarding Jesus’ nature and destiny? How does this truth impact how we may see our current trials or struggles in this world? Scripture talks about believers being co-heirs with Christ in His rule, what does that mean? How does that impact how we view the future?

Memorization: This week as we talk about who Jesus is and His nature above the angels it may be good to let that truth seep in. Psalm 110 has some prophetic words that Scripture later reveals is about Jesus. Take time and store that truth in your heart.

3 Book Challenge: Are you going to participate? If so, who is the person you are going to be walking with? Take time this week, along with your prayer, to identify the person you want to walk through the book with and plan to ask and take the first step.

Jesus Christ Is Enough // Hearing God Speak (Heb. 1:1-4)

  1. How would you describe your job to a 5-year-old?

  2. If you had to listen to one song on repeat for a year what would it be?

Getting Started

1. Open up with some prayer – some possible prayer topics:

  • God would lead your time of discussion.

  • That this study would help our understanding of who God is and who we are in light of that.

  • Pray for your GG, that God would bring unity and community in your group.

  • That God would reveal to us where we are trying to add something to Jesus.

2. Read Hebrews 1:1-4

Discussion Questions

  1. The series is called “Jesus Christ Is Enough” and oftentimes as Christians we want to “add” something to Jesus to earn our righteousness. What are some works you are trying to add to your walk with Christ? What do we do when we see these works try and insert themselves in our life?

  2. It is sometimes easy to think that people in the OT had it easier because God would speak through a prophet and then to the people. Does God speak today? How does He speak with His people? What does it mean that God is speaking through His Son?

  3. When looking at our world it does not take long to see a need for a solution. When Hebrews talks about Jesus redeeming and purifying both the world and His people, what does that mean? Why does that give us any hope? If Jesus is going to purify this world what does that mean for those who are not in Christ? Why and does that spur us to any action?

  4. There are so many views on who Jesus is and what He was like. Where can we find the truth of who Jesus is? Why should we strive to be like Him? The author of Hebrews gives several descriptions of who and what Jesus is like in this opening passage. What are those? Do we give Christ the proper honor in our lives with our words and actions? What happens when we forget to do that?

  5. There can be a common temptation to compartmentalize our lives by putting the “religious items” (church, Bible reading, prayer, etc.) into one category that we give to Jesus and other items (work, money, hobbies, family, etc.) into a separate category for ourselves. How does Jesus being Lord over all of our life challenge this idea? What areas in your life do you try and control? How can we take a step toward viewing Jesus as Lord over our whole life?

Meditation: Take time this week each day and just think about the things Hebrews says about Christ. Think about what they mean and what they mean to you. It is good to take each day and remind yourself of the goodness of who Christ is and what that means for your life.

3 Book Challenge: Are you going to participate? If so, who is the person you are going to be walking with? Take time this week, along with your prayer, to identify the person you want to walk through the book with and plan to ask and take the first step.

3 Book Challenge (2 Tim. 2:1-2)

Introduction

As we step into a new year at Berean there has been some conversation of how we as a church can grow. As we dive into 2 Timothy 2:1-2, Paul lays out that Timothy has been entrusted with a lot by Paul and others that he should turn around and teach/entrust to other men. How can we take what we have been entrusted with and disciple others?

Ice Breaker Questions

Here are some possible ways to get a conversation started:

  1. How was your Christmas break?

  2. Do you have a New Year’s Resolution?

Getting Started

1. Open up with some prayer – some possible prayer topics:

  • God would lead your time of discussion.

  • That this study would help our understanding of who God is and who we are in light of that.

  • Pray for your GG, that God would bring unity and community in your group.

  • That we would seek out what God has for us in this new year.

2. Read 2 Timothy 2:1-2

Discussion Questions

  1. What have you been entrusted with from God? Who are the people that have poured into you? Do you see where God has worked in your life to reveal His character to you? (Maybe that has come through time spent with the Lord, in His word, prayer, or maybe through people He has placed in your life.)

  2. Which of the four suggestions given on Sunday to help “be strengthened by grace” do you need to grow in? (Meditation, confession, remembering our new identity, and recalling our assured hope) How do you take a practical step in growing in that area? For example, there was one person who said she listens to worship music to focus her mind on Christ.

  3. As we contemplate this “3 Book Challenge”, who is someone in your life that you could do this with? If you do not have a person, how do you take a step in identifying that person? If you don’t plan on participating, why is that?

  4. When Berean talks about the “3 Book Challenge” we are simply talking about a tool to disciple others. Read Matthew 28:19-20. Do you feel that your life is characterized by disciple making? What holds you back from discipling others? (Fears, insecurities, time, etc.) Does Scripture speak to any of those? What does it say?

  5. Being a Christian and sharing Christ with others can often be very difficult and, if we are honest, feel very awkward. What does Paul promise that the grace of God will do with Timothy? Read Luke 12:8-12. What comfort does Jesus give to those who are speaking for God? What does that mean for us?

  6. Often a very overlooked part of 2 Tim. 2:2 is the last phrase, “who will be able to teach others also.” What do you think that means? What does this look like in our discipleship? Why is this important?

  • Pray for new people to come to know Christ this season.

Personal Spiritual Practice

This section is for anyone that wants some practical steps to try throughout their week. they are not required, but maybe a great way to reinforce what has been discussed during group. Maybe this could even be a way to check in either during the week or the next time you meet as a group.

Prayer: Do we pray for those who have not put their faith in Christ? As we talk about this “3 Book Challenge” would you consider praying every day this week that God would either bring people for you to disciple or to have the courage and boldness to ask to disciple someone in your life?

3 Book Challenge: Are you going to participate? If so, who is the person you are going to be walking with? Take time this week, along with your prayer, to identify the person you want to walk through the book with and plan to ask and take the first step.
